Cold Wave in Iceland: Frost Surpasses -30°C

The frost dropped below -30°C in Iceland’s central highlands, west of Vatnajökull glacier, on Friday night. It measured -30.3°C in Veidivatnahraun lava fields by Thórisvatn lake. The record is -38°C.

In inhabited areas in south and west Iceland the frost measured around -20°C last weekend. The weather was calm in those regions while in north and east Iceland snow fell and storms raged, Morgunbladid reports.

The winter 1917-1918 is commonly referred to as “the Great Winter of Frost” when temperatures dropped to a record low of -38°C in Mödrudalur valley, the eastern highland, on January 21, 1918. In Reykjavík the frost measured -24.5°C at the most.
