Increased toll fares on the Humber Bridge have been announced.

Car drivers face a 20p rise to £2.90 each way under new prices which could come into effect from 1 April.

The Humber Bridge Board is obliged to put the cost up in line with a Department of Transport Agreement to raise tolls every two years.

Bridge master Peter Hill said 70% of its income went on repaying the bridge's £333m debt. The public will be consulted before the rise takes effect.

About 7,500 people have signed a petition on the Downing Street website calling on the government to scrap tolls on the Humber Bridge.

Protest group Humber Action Against Tolls (HAAT) says the cost adversely affect the local economy and hit motorists who have to regularly use the crossing.

Mr Hill said: "We actually keep by far the lowest income compared to similar operations in the country."
