SINGAPORE: Asian contemporary art took centre stage at the Borobudur Auction this weekend.

Touted as one of the biggest auctions in Asia, the event drew some 2,000 international art collectors.

The collection of artworks by Indonesian contemporary artists stood out at the auction.

A painting, named "Silent Road" by Putu Sutawijaya was auctioned at S$350,000 – 11 times more than its estimated price.

It also nearly shattered the auction record for Southeast Asian artwork, which is set at S$360,000.

Another Indonesian artist, Nyoman Masriadi, also did well at the auction. His collection went under the hammer for S$200,000.

Apart from Indonesia, works from the Philippines and Thailand were also popular.

Even though there wasn't a large collection of works from Chinese contemporary artists at the auction, a painting by Wu Guan Zhong still emerged as one of the most expensive at the price of around S$750,000.
