UNESCO team in State

BHUBANESWAR: A large contingent from the international body Unesco is in the State.

Although the team’s visit is stated to be for private purposes, sources said the Unesco team will take stock of the conservation of internationally famous monuments in Orissa.

Unesco accords the World Heritage Site (WHS) status to monuments as well as places of historical and cultural importance. The Sun Temple at Konark is the only site to have got the WHS status.

The ASI, competent to recommend the sites for WHS status, had in the past suggested Sri Jagannath Temple, Puri for the honour but it is yet to receive the UNESCO nod.
