Nananu-i-Ra island is a popular scuba diving area. The island is located on the north-eastern tip of the main island of Viti Levu. From here it is possible to see the distant island of Vanua Levu, Fiji's second largest island. The passage of water that separates the two islands is called the Vatu-I-Ra Channel and is part of the Bligh Waters, named after the voyager, Captain William Bligh, navigated a long boat and 18 faithful crew through the passage as part of his mammoth 6,700 km journey to Indonesia following the famous mutiny on the Bounty in Tonga when he was cast adrift. The ocean here, fed by the south-east trades, is rich in nutrients and has led to the formation of prolific marine life.
The accessible white sandy beaches and different types of resorts on Nananu-i-Ra island makes it an attractive destination for domestic tourists from Suva and backpackers travelling through North of Viti Levu. Dive sites include Dream Maker, The Maze, Shark Junction, The Pinnacle. There are a number of budget resorts such as Betham's, Charlie's Place and McDonalds, or for more stylish accommodation, there is the Safari Lodge or the Nananu Beach Reort.
On the mainland across from Nananu-i-Ra in a region known as the Sun Coast, are a couple of resorts, one budget - Volivoli Beach Resort - and one deluxe - Wananavu Resort & Spa. Both these resorts organise dive tours to the dive sites in this region. In fact Ra Divers is one of the main dive operators here, is based at Volivoli and services all the properties mentioned above.
The island of Nananu-i-Ra has an irregular shape, which has resulted in many beautiful beaches in the various curves of the island's geographical formation. Indeed at one point, one may walk from a sunrise facing beach to a sunset facing beach in just a few minutes. Everyone knows the beauty of a sunset, but when you visit Nananu-i-Ra, don't miss the opportunity also of wandering to the beach and watching the sun rise. A magical experience and what better way to start a day in this Fiji paradise island.
Had you stood on this beach in 1789, you may have just caught a glimpse of Captain William Bligh steering his long boat and crew on its journey from the famous Mutiny on the Bounty in Tahiti to safety of Timor in Indonesia!
For the less adventurous, snorkelling affords great views of the local coral. Back on terra firma, you can hike round the whole island in about four hours, with the promise of a tropical sunset at the end of it to keep you going. Look out for the Nakauvadra mountain range on Viti Levu – one of the many examples of natural beauty that is an inherent part of life in the south Pacific. Secluded and peaceful, Nananu-i-Ra is one of those rare, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. And it’s just waiting to be discovered by you.
