Taj Mahal India Pier 21 Halifax

Millions of Canadians can trace their family history back through Pier 21 in Halifax. It is Canada's Ellis Island, the point of entry for the great immigrations of the 20th century; the immigration which took place from 1928 to 1971, in this case. Between those years, one million immigrants first set foot on Canadian soil at Pier 21. As well, half a million Canadian troops bound for Europe passed through Pier 21.

Pier 21 is a Canadian immigration museum. It operated from 1928 to 1971 as Canada's primary immigration port. In that time over a million and a half immigrants, war refugees, and soldiers entered Canada through its doors. Pier 21 was refurbished and opened as a museum on July 1, 1999. Inside (upstairs) there are displays of passports, photos, stories, and a bunch of small movie theatres where you can learn the immigration experience for people coming from different countries (i.e., one booth is labelled "Russian", another "Poland", etc.) What struck me most was a recreation of a waiting room with a customs desk at the front. I can't imagine what it must've felt like sitting there waiting with your family for your turn to move permanently into a strange new country. We attended my cousin's wedding ceremony here--they wanted to do it at this location because the bride's grandparents came to Canada through Pier 21.

Pier 21 About

Taj Mahal IndiaPier 21 was a gateway to Canada between 1928 and 1971. During these years more than one million individuals first set foot on Canadian soil at Pier 21, and almost half a million Canadian service personnel departed from the Pier to serve overseas during the Second World War.

The Pier 21 Society was founded in 1988 to preserve the human history of Pier 21. The re-opened facility, now a National Historic Site, houses interactive displays, artifacts, exhibits celebrating the ethnic diversity and cultural heritage of Canada, and a Resource Centre for visitors interested in exploring their family history. The exhibit is fully bilingual and accessible.

Pier 21 offers a holographic film illustrating the history of the site and the variety of immigrants who once passed through its halls. After watching the film the audience exits through a train car, experiencing Canadian landscapes flash by the “moving” train. Inside the train compartments interviews with immigrants who passed through this historic place are shown, recounting the moving stories of their journey to a new land.

Pier 21 Facts

Between 1928 and 1971, one million immigrants reached Canada via Pier 21. Tens of thousands of war brides, refugees and displaced persons first glimpsed their new world in Halifax. In 1988, restoration of this essential port of entry began. Today, visitors can examine the exhibits and trace their connections to those immigrants. At the south end of the harbour, Pier 21 is easily accessible to the downtown area via the waterfront walkway.
